Our mission

The Cornerstone community centre provides a safe, welcoming and inclusive community space, working in close partnership with the neighbourhood to fulfil the social and educational aspirations and needs of community groups and individuals, in particular those people who are marginalised, and to cultivate a trained team of volunteers.

About CCC

Our History

The Centre is the result of a joint project between local residents and the congregation of St. John The Baptist Church. Work began in 1989 with the construction of a three-floored building within the nave of the church. Since that early stage, Cornerstone has grown considerably and it is now a very busy centre, hosting over fifty groups a week.

Our Neighbourhood

The neighbourhood in which Cornerstone operates is a highly populated area – 8,897 residents – (2001 Census), in which wealth and deprivation intermingle. Multiple occupation is commonplace, since many Regency houses have been subdivided into flats and bedsits. Private rented accommodation amounts to 49.8 % of those living in this ward (2001 Census). Isolation and lack of opportunities are areas of concern and are at the heart of our work.
